Occlusal splints (night guards)

Home E Services & Procedures E Occlusal splints (night guards)

An occlusal splint is a removable dental appliance that is custom made and molded to fit the upper or lower teeth. It can protect the teeth and restorations by distributing bite forces, create longevity for restorations, and prolong the life of natural teeth by preventing stresses that can crack or wear them abnormally. It can also manage jaw dysfunction, protect the temporomandibular joints (TMJs) from excessive bite stresses that can produce pain and dysfunction, clicking and popping, jaw or facial muscle discomfort and fatigue, and stabilize occlusion, as well as create space prior to restorative procedures. People prone to nighttime clenching or grinding should wear their occlusal splints as prescribed.

Occlusal splints are typically made of a heat-cured acrylic resin and are easily inserted and removed by the patient.
